Evaluation of Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) Genotypes for Yield, Dry Matter, Starch and Beta-Carotene Content in Uyo, Southeastern Nigeria

Six orange-fleshed sweetpotato genotypes, namely, Naspot-12, Umuspo-1, Lourdes, Erica, Delvia and umuspo-3, sourced from National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike were evaluated for fresh storage root yield, dry matter, starch Beta-carotene content in 2020 2021 cropping seasons at the Teaching Farm of University Uyo. The experiment was laid a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis variance, correlation principal component analysis performed yield related traits while standard procedure followed to determine beta-carotene content. In this study, results variance showed that six genotypes differed significantly (P≤ 0.05) number marketable roots, weight roots yield. Umuspo-3 produced highest (28.78t/ha, 27.55t/ha) seasons, respectively. result also revealed highly positively (P< 0.01) correlated Principal (PCA) had two main components explaining 70.25% total variation tuber contributing most first PCA. recorded matter 42.78%. Lourdes content, 65.23mg100g-1 lowest 24.55mg100-1. OFSP ranged 1.03mg/100g FW 9.19mg/100g FW. 9.19 mg/100g FW.Umuspo-3 genotype could be recommended cultivation Uyo agro-ecology high as an excellent source beta-carotene, it consumed ameliorate vitamin A deficiency children pregnancy women within State its environs.
